Why Reading Matters More—not Less—in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence is changing how children access information. A question that once required searching through a book, asking an adult, or reading several sources can now be answered within seconds. AI can explain difficult concepts, simplify complex language, summarize long passages, and generate ideas almost instantly.

These capabilities make AI a valuable learning tool. At the same time, they make reading—and the thinking that happens through reading—more important, not less.

The reason is simple. Access to information is becoming easier, but understanding information, evaluating it, connecting it with existing knowledge, and deciding whether it can be trusted still require human thought.

As AI becomes increasingly present in children's lives, one habit may become particularly important: giving their own minds the first turn.

Reading Is More Than a Way to Get Information

Reading has never been simply about transferring facts from a page into the mind.

When children read, they constantly interpret information. They use context to understand unfamiliar words, connect new ideas with previous knowledge, follow arguments, remember earlier details, make predictions, and adjust their understanding as new information appears.

Stories add another dimension. Children imagine places they have never visited, consider the motivations of different characters, encounter perspectives beyond their own, and think about consequences without experiencing them directly.

Much of this mental activity is invisible, but it is part of what makes reading so valuable.

Over time, reading also builds an internal library of vocabulary, concepts, experiences, facts, and connections. This background knowledge makes it easier to understand new information later.

A 2021 critical review by researchers Reid Smith, Pamela Snow, Tanya Serry, and Lorraine Hammond examined 23 studies involving primary-aged children. The review highlighted an important relationship between background knowledge and reading comprehension: what children already know influences how successfully they understand what they read.

In other words, knowledge helps create more knowledge.

Background Knowledge Matters in the Age of AI

The same principle becomes particularly relevant when children use artificial intelligence.

AI can produce an answer that sounds clear and convincing even when the information is incomplete, oversimplified, or incorrect. Recognizing those problems requires more than knowing how to use an AI tool. A learner needs enough understanding of the subject to evaluate what the tool produces.

A child who has read widely about animals, for example, has a stronger foundation for noticing a questionable claim about animal behaviour. A child familiar with several historical sources is better positioned to recognize when an explanation leaves out an important perspective.

Without background knowledge, a polished AI-generated response can be difficult to question.

This is why AI literacy should extend beyond learning how to write effective prompts. Children also need the knowledge and critical-thinking skills to assess the answers they receive.

UNESCO has raised similar concerns about over-reliance on generative AI in education, emphasizing the importance of preserving human agency, reflection, and critical thinking as these technologies become more widely used.

Reading contributes directly to that foundation.

AI Removes Friction—but Some Mental Effort Is Valuable

One of AI's greatest strengths is its ability to make difficult tasks easier.

It can rewrite a complicated paragraph in simpler language, provide a summary of a long text, suggest ideas when someone feels stuck, or explain the same concept in several different ways.

Used thoughtfully, these capabilities can support learning.

However, there is a difference between removing unnecessary difficulty and removing the thinking that helps learning happen.

When children encounter a challenging passage, they may need to reread it, consider the context, connect it with something they already know, and gradually construct meaning. That process requires effort, but the effort itself can be valuable.

If every moment of uncertainty is immediately resolved by AI, children may have fewer opportunities to practise staying with a difficult idea long enough to understand it independently.

Research and educational discussions highlighted by UNESCO have raised similar questions about cognitive effort and dependence on AI tools. The concern is not that AI inevitably reduces critical thinking, but that how it is used matters.

The goal should therefore not be to create unnecessary struggle or keep useful technology away from children. It is to preserve opportunities for children to think before technology does the thinking for them.

A Simple Principle for Families: Brain First, AI Second

A useful approach for parents to promote independent thinking is to change the order in which AI is used.

A simple family principle can be:

Read → Think → Ask AI → Compare → Think Again

This positions AI as a tool for extending thought rather than replacing its first stages.

There are several easy ways families can practise this at home.

Guess Before You Ask

When a child wants to ask AI a factual or explanatory question, encourage them to form their own hypothesis first.

The initial answer does not need to be correct. Making a prediction activates existing knowledge and gives the child something to compare with the information they receive afterward.

Challenge the Robot

After reading about a subject, children can ask AI questions about the same topic and compare its responses with what they have learned.

They can look for missing details, oversimplifications, contradictions, or possible mistakes. This transforms AI from an authority providing answers into a source that can be examined and questioned.

Predict Before Reading On

Pausing during a story and predicting what might happen next encourages children to pay attention to clues, characters, and earlier events.

The value is not in predicting correctly. It lies in using evidence from the text to form an idea.

Ask for Questions Instead of Summaries

After reading, parents often ask children to explain what happened or summarize what they learned. Another useful approach is to ask what they are now curious about.

Questions reveal where a child's interest is moving and can become starting points for further reading, experiments, conversations, documentaries, or AI-assisted exploration.

Follow the Curiosity

Reading does not always need to follow a planned sequence.

An interest in sharks might lead to a book about oceans, then an article about animal senses, followed by questions about evolution or ecosystems. These seemingly unplanned paths help children build networks of knowledge that can support future learning.

Allowing children to follow genuine curiosity can make reading feel less like an assignment and more like a way of exploring the world.

Let Children See Adults Read

One of the simplest ways to encourage reading is to make it visible as part of ordinary family life.

Adults do not need to read children's books alongside their children. Reading a novel, news article, recipe, biography, instruction manual, or nonfiction book all demonstrate the same principle: people read because they want to understand, discover, enjoy, or accomplish something.

Reading becomes more meaningful when children see it as something people choose to do, rather than something children are required to practise.

The Goal Is Not Simply to Read More Books

The value of reading should not be reduced to the number of books a child finishes.

Children do not need to love every book, nor should reading become another achievement to measure. Comics, nonfiction, magazines, instructions, articles, graphic novels, and books about highly specific interests can all contribute to a reading life.

What matters is what develops underneath the habit.

Reading can build vocabulary, knowledge, imagination, attention, curiosity, and the ability to stay with complex ideas. It gives children repeated opportunities to interpret information rather than simply receive it.

These abilities become increasingly important when information is abundant and instantly available.

Reading Should Lead. AI Should Follow.

The future of learning does not need to be framed as a choice between books and artificial intelligence. But the order matters.

Children should have something to bring to AI: knowledge, vocabulary, context, questions, ideas, and their own interpretations.

AI can then help them go further. It can provide another explanation, introduce a different perspective, help investigate a question, or offer information that children can compare with what they have already learned.

When reading leads, AI becomes a tool for extending thought rather than starting it.

A child who has already read about a subject can approach an AI-generated answer with context. They have something against which to compare the response. They are better prepared to notice when information seems incomplete, when another perspective may be missing, or when something deserves further investigation.

Technology will continue to change, and the tools children use to learn will change with it. Reading can remain one of the foundations that prepares them to use those tools thoughtfully.
